#1 - Pet Partners Handler Workshop

Starting in 2012 all Delta Society Pet Partners volunteer candidates must successfully complete a Pet Partners Handler Course (handlers only, no pets) prior to taking the Pet Partners Skills & Aptitude Tests with their pets. Angel Paws is pleased to be able to offer the Pet Partners Handler Workshop taught by our own licensed Pet Partners Instructor & Team Evaluator. * If you are interested in registering for our next workshop please click HERE for more information about Training & Registration Prerequisites and download, complete and return our Volunteer Application AND "15 Questions to Ask Yourself..." provided on that page and below. Meanwhile, the previous Home Study Manual Course Registration process will be accepted by Delta Society until June 30th 2012.
“At first I thought it was strange that I had to devote this time to the program without my dog being involved.
But, once the Workshop was complete, I understood why. It really familiarized me with handling my dog, what to expect in the evaluation,
and the experiences I would undergo while out on a therapy visit.” - Emily Narkiewicz, New Pet Partner with Frankie, St. Louis, MO

Delta Society offers 2 options to meet this requirement:
1. ATTEND A WORKSHOP : Attending the workshop is highly recommended. Potential Pet Partners who complete an instructor-lead Pet Partner Handler Training Course are more likely to pass the Pet Partner Evaluation on the first attempt. The Pet Partners handler training course is presented as either an 8 or 12-hour multi-media, interactive course. Students receive a copy of the Pet Partners Handler Student Guide & registration packet (provided by the Instructor) and practice visiting skills. Courses are scheduled throughout the year in locations all over the country. All workshops are taught by Delta-licensed instructors.
Although this workshop does not include dogs it lays a solid foundation and teaches a deeper understanding and rationale for the requirements to pass the Pet Partners Skills & Aptitude Tests. Although it is not required to complete this course prior to our optional Angel Paws Therapy Dog Training Course those who do complete this workshop prior to dog training will have a better understanding of what it takes to be a successful Pet Partner so all subsequent dog training, socialization, leadership and practice sessions will benefit from that understanding. While it may be ideal to complete this workshop before dog training we do NOT recommend that you postpone dog training in order to do so! Basic dog training should begin as soon as possible! Please see our Dog Training Position Statement and related links for more information and referrals about dog training. |
The Angel Paws' Pet Partners Handlers' workshop fee is expected to be $40. or less and will include the Pet Partners Study Guide and refreshments (Scholarships may be available for qualified candidates. Please us for more information about scholarships if necessary. Some groups charge between $100. & $200.). Angel Paws will still be providing our own Volunteer Training & Orientation free of charge for those who pass the Pet Partners Skills & Aptitude Tests and that workshop is expected to be shortened somewhat from previous workshops due to this recent change in Delta requirements.

2. Complete the Online Pet Partners Handler Course: For handlers who cannot attend a workshop, Delta offers an online version of the Pet Partners Handler Course. The course includes a downloadable student guide and additional supportive documents, with interactive activities, video, knowledge checks to reinforce learning that will help handlers understand the necessary skills to visit safely and successfully. Students that complete and pass the overall assessment will receive a certificate of completion and registration packet. The Course Fee is $70. and Delta Society unfortunately no longer offers affiliate discounts on this online version of the previous Home Study Handlers Training. Please Click HERE for more information and/or to order the Pet Partners Online Handlers Course from Delta Society.
