PET PARTNERS SKILLS & APTITUDE TEST

If you are able to help in this capacity you are worth your weight in GOLD!!! as we are not able to appropriately screen volunteers without you!   We are always looking for Neutral Dog Teams to help with our Pet Partners Skills & Aptitude Test.  Please immediately if you think you may have a dog able to serve in this capacity and you are willing to help us out.  Although we prefer volunteers, we will pay if necessary.  FREE T-Shirt for all volunteers!

Opportunity - to work together with other Angel Paws volunteers, learn more about the Pet Partners Skills & Aptitude Test process and animal behavior as well as meet and greet a variety of both animal and human volunteer candidates

Activities - Neutral Dog Exercise does not require a registered therapy dog but the Neutral Dog does need to be an exceptionally calm & well behaved dog to walk up to and past candidate dogs without showing any interest in the other dog walking or cat, very small dog or other small animal being carried.   The Neutral Dog Team enters from outside the room and walks toward candidate animal/handler team, with the dogs/animals on the outside, handlers on the inside, pausing briefly for the HANDLERS ONLY to say hello and shake hands.  The entire exercise takes no longer than 10 seconds.  The Neutral Dog must be able to walk calmly by it's handlers side - on both the right and left side depending on the candidates preference - and neither dog may cross the handler's midline.  Because we want to give our candidates the best possible opportunity to succeed the less interest the Neutral Dog shows in the other team the better so as not to incite a level of interest that might cause the candidate to fail the exercise.  (best if there is little to no eye contact or tail wagging)  (See video below)

***  This is the only exercise the Neutral Dog Team participates in however our Neutral Dog Teams are worth their weight in GOLD as we are not able to conduct our skills and aptitude tests without them!

Please review our Evaluator Assistant Pac

***
It is important to note that we are testing to assure that the candidate's dog/animal will not only not react aggressively to the Neutral Dog but that he or she will willingly respond to a "leave it" or alternative verbal/visual cue to stay completely away from the Neutral Dog and that the handler will have sufficient verbal/visual control not to have to resort to harsh tones, leash corrections or physical restraint.  Also, that the handler knows their animal's needs, is able to pro-actively plan ahead and succeed.  This is often quite difficult for friendly dogs accustomed to meeting and playing with other dogs - thus the need for our Neutral Dog to show as little interest as possible in the team being tested.  For more details about purpose and process please see description & videos below.

Exercise 12 - NEW 2016 Reaction to a Neutral Dog

Picture
Purpose:  This exercise demonstrates that the handler is aware of the animal's potential response to a dog, and can help the animal succeed while still being polite and friendly to a stranger while passing another dog AND visit with a client after passing another dog.

Procedure:  Testing Team stands with Evaluator or Assistant as a Neutral Dog Team enters the room and proceeds to visit with a seated assistant.  As the Neutral Dog Team ends their brief visit and walks toward the testing team the two teams pass within arms length.  The testing team then proceeds on for a brief visit with the seated assistant as the neutral dog team leaves the room.

As in all exercises, the handler must be aware of the animal's potential response to a dog, PRO-actively (rather than RE-actively or IN-actively) help the animal succeed, and at the same time be polite and friendly to a stranger.  If the test is done with two dogs, they should show no more than a casual interest in each other.  A dog that crosses the vertical mid-line of the handler, either in front or behind, to try and reach the neutral dog will be scored a "Not Ready".  (Small dogs may be carried for this exercise.)  Cats and other animals can be held by the handler or placed in a carrier and walked past a dog.  The animal should not:  Growl or bite, Stare, Bark or cry, Chase, Raise its hackles, Attack, Attempt to jump on a person or an animal, OR Cross the midline to greet the neutral dog or person.

NOTE:  Teams will pass directly parallel to each other rather than on an arch as shown in the video above.  See below for detailed explanation with diagram.  Location of doors in and out of room may vary.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all who have so generously served Angel Paws
in this exceptional role!

We couldn't do it without you!
