OPPORTUNITY: to meet and greet R.E.A.D. participants, learn about our Puppy Tales/R.E.A.D.® program, network with other volunteers

SERVICE DESCRIPTION:  The special individuals willing to fill this leadership volunteer position(s) will work independently to meet, greet, assist and educate children and parents of children participating in Angel Paws Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program events in libraries, book stores and other facilities.

TIME COMMITMENT:  Time commitment will vary widely depending on project schedule.  Experienced R.E.A.D. Host/Hostess volunteers are much in demand when we are in session at Licking County Library or have special events so it is very much appreciated if volunteers can help again and again!

FUNCTIONS:   The Puppy Tales or R.E.A.D. Host/Hostesses will function as the first person children and parents will interact with when arriving for R.E.A.D. sessions!  Responsibilities are numerous and complex - AND it's a lot of fun!
RESPONSIBILITIES:
R.E.A.D. Host/Hostesses should enjoy children, reading and children's books.  Outgoing, friendly, helpful personality are important.  Ability to inform and answer questions about the Angel Paws' R.E.A.D. program are also important but we will provide you with all the information you need.  Dependability and punctuality are required.

Primary responsibilities may include:
    • Help transporting, loading, unloading and setting up display items
    • Greeting parents & children
    • Explaining the process – what R.E.A.D. is (1 child with 1 trained literacy mentoring animal/handler team at a time!) and what R.E.A.D. is NOT (group story time or more than 1 child at a time) and answering other questions from parents and others
    • Name tags
    • Have Photo Release Forms signed
    • Keep Sign up Schedule for children to read with specific teams
    • Help children choose books (if/when R.E.A.D. volunteers don't keep book selections with them)
    • Directing/walking children to assigned team
    • Making sure there is another child to each team every 10, 15 or 20 minutes depending on venue and plan
    • Helping with frequent reader tracking documents (if library or other on-going program)
    • Help with evaluation forms from parents (if library or other on-going program)
