Handlers Workshop
Learn the skills needed to visit safely & effectively with your animal in hospitals, nursing homes, classrooms, & other facilities.

The emphasis is on what handlers need to know to facilitate safe and effective visits with an appropriate, well trained & well socialized animal; it is not an animal training class. Basic animal training for a reliable response to verbal/visual cues on a LOOSE leash & socialization in a variety of environments should preclude this workshop. Contact us for support & referrals! |

"Effective visiting process consists of handlers who appropriately present their animals and animals who appropriately receive the people being visited. ... It is important to note that an animal's perception can differ greatly from a human’s perception of the very same event. ...
All the screening and training in the world will not prepare an animal for the challenges of intimacy and emotion encountered in visiting animal programs. ... Handler’s who protect their animals from undo stress increase their animal's confidence.
Success breeds confidence and confidence encourages continued growth."

Angel Paws' Pet Partners Handler Workshop Graduates
"Your workshop was terrific--I loved every minute. When I signed up for the program, I couldn't imagine how instructions for handlers only could possibly fill 14 hours. But the two days were absolutely packed with helpful material. I learned so much more than I'd anticipated. Patti (Pet Partners licensed Instructor) is a wonderful, compassionate instructor. Molly Moo, the dog half of her therapy team was with us throughout the workshop, to help demonstrate various activities." - Molly Culbertson, Columbus, OH, '13

More Testimonials
"When I heard that the Angel Paws handlers training (without dogs) would take two days to complete, my first impression was of skepticism. What could possibly be covered that would take that length of time? The multi-media and interactive role-playing during those two days was not only comprehensive but also interesting. It challenged my thinking and I considered it time well spent. This organization highly values the mutually beneficial relationship between volunteer, patient and pet, with a keen attention to safety, sensitivity and effective interaction." - Richard R. Donnard, D.O., Chief of Staff, Medical Center of Newark; Medical Director, Hospice of Central Ohio
"(Pet Partners licensed Instructor) went into great detail about the importance of safety from both the handlers perspective and the animal. I was amazed at Patti's knowledge and compassion for helping therapy teams become a success! There was so much material that I didn't know that I didn't know! I feel lucky to be under her wing!" - Katie Arnold, Columbus, Ohio '14 "I loved this workshop! I almost wish there was a third day to have extra time." - Laura Butt, Columbus, Ohio '14
"(Pet Partners Instructor) had a vast knowledge of everything covered, answered everyone's questions and taught even more than I expected." ... "Nice job! (I feel) well prepared for the next step." ... "I am glad I came to this workshop! Very very informative." ... "Great job! Great Food!" ... "Awesome information! Enjoyed role playing exercises."... "Great Facility!" ... "Lot's of information in a short time. Very informative and so very helpful." ... "I was very impressed with all aspects and instructor knowledge." ... "It was very well organized and informative." ... "Thank you for your time and great ideas to help us advance toward registered status." ... "Great location, comfortable chairs and room - awesome snacks & nice people!"

More about our Pet Partners ® Handler Workshop
Learn the skills needed to visit safely & effectively with your animal in hospitals, nursing homes, classrooms, and other facilities.
Learn the skills needed to visit safely & effectively with your animal in hospitals, nursing homes, classrooms, and other facilities.
The Angel Paws' Pet Partners handler training course is presented as a 14-hour multi-media, interactive course. Students receive a bound copy of the Pet Partners Handler Student Guide, registration packet, additional handouts & certificate of completion, practice visiting skills, participate in experiential learning activities and create an individual Personal Action Plan for themselves and their own Pet Partner.
Although this workshop does not include animals it lays a solid foundation and teaches a deeper understanding and rationale for the requirements to not only prepare for and pass the Pet Partners Skills & Aptitude Tests (PPSAT) but to continue on to become safe, effective and confident Pet Partners therapy TEAMS. DO NOT postpone animal training & socialization! DOG TRAINING ESPECIALLY SHOULD BE WELL ON IT'S WAY BEFORE REGISTERING FOR THIS WORKSHOP! IF YOU ARE JUST STARTING NOW YOU MAY WANT TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT WORKSHOP AFTER YOU HAVE COMPLETED MORE TRAINING & PRACTICE. Please see our Dog Training Position Statement, Recommended Dog Trainers, Can MY Dog be a Therapy Dog?, Does MY Dog Need Special Therapy Dog Training? and related links for more information and referrals about dog training. Although this workshop is ideally designed to be taken close to when candidates feel ready or almost ready to take the PPSAT those who complete this workshop concurrent with continued dog training may have a deeper understanding of what it takes to be a successful Pet Partner and why so all subsequent dog training, socialization, leadership and practice sessions can be expected to benefit from starting off on the right paw with that understanding. The PPSAT must be passed within 2 years after completion of the workshop - preferably within 3 months. So it can NOT be stressed enough to START DOG TRAINING IMMEDIATELY! And pay close attention to our Essential Tips for Therapy Dog Training. |

This workshop is designed to train the "human end of the leash" how to safely and effectively work with an already well trained and socialized animal on therapy visits. It is important for handlers of all species to be familiar with Pet Partners Skills & Aptitude Test requirements. Please click HERE for detailed information about Skills & Aptitude Requirements. DOG HANDLERS should NOT delay dog training and should enroll in a basic dog training course &/or private training sessions ASAP. Although no specific dog training is required all dog handlers should be currently enrolled &/or have recently completed basic group dog training with a professional PRIOR to this workshop and practiced in a variety of unfamiliar locations away from home with test criteria in mind. Any exceptions must be pre-approved by instructor. It usually takes more than 1 class & a lot of practice in a variety of locations away from home to adequately prepare for the Pet Partners Skills & Aptitude Test. This workshop is expected to benefit subsequent training but basic animal training and socialization should ideally be well on the way before taking this Handlers Workshop.
