READING EDUCATION ASSISTANCE DOGS® (R.E.A.D.)
READING EDUCATION ASSISTANCE DOGS® (R.E.A.D.), founded in 1999, was the first & currently remains the only nationally recognized program to provide comprehensive training & standards based program implementation for volunteers to incorporate the safe and effective use of registered therapy animals in literacy mentoring sessions. R.E.A.D. was carefully planned, researched and implemented at Intermountain Therapy Animals in Salt Lake City, Utah and has helped thousands of children discover the joy of books and improve reading and communication skills by providing an empowering opportunity to read aloud to a true friend who will never judge, criticize, intimidate or ridicule. R.E.A.D. animals are all trained & registered therapy animals who volunteer with thier specialy trained owner/handler literacy mentors in schools, libraries and other facilities for children interested in improving their confidence, skills - or just having fun! See R.E.A.D. brochure below &/or click on the R.E.A.D. logo on the left to visit the R.E.A.D. web site &/or click HERE to go directly to R.E.A.D. Frequently Asked Questions which provides a more detailed explanation of exactly how the program works, how library programs differ from school programs, what the documented benefits of R.E.A.D. programs are and more. While Library R.E.A.D. programs are considered Animal Assisted Activity (AAA) School R.E.A.D. programs are considered Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) because they incorporate individualized lesson plans designed in collaboration with teachers or reading specialists to target a specific academic or behavioral challenge or learning disability. The process is documented and evaluated. For more information about the definitions of AAA vs. AAT please click HERE.
